What is a blind flange?

Blind flange is used to close ends of piping systems. Blind flange is a plate for covering or closing the end of a pipe. It is a kind of round plate with no center hold but with all the proper bolt holes. This blind flange is available in various sizes and materials and is used to provide positive closer on the ends of pipes, valves or equipment nozzles. This flange helps in easy access to a line once it has been sealed. The blind flange is sometimes custom made or machined to accept a nominal sized pipe to which reduction is being made.

Blind Flanges are commonly used in petrochemical, pipe engineering, public services & water works.
Blind pipe flanges are often used for high pressure applications.

Stainless Raised Face Blind Flange

The raised face concentrates more pressure on a smaller area, which provides increased containment capability.

  • Types: Raised Face Blind

Stainless Blind Plate Flange

stainless steel blind plate flanges, which are manufactured without a bore and are applied to block the end of a pipe system or valve.

Blind flange is put at the end of pipe or at the junction that would possibly be a future expansion into that direction.

Blind flanges are solid round plates that have no center holes. These plates have boltholes around the perimeter of the plate distributed in an even manner. Blind pipe flanges are commonly used for pressure testing the flow of liquid or gas through a pipe or vessel. Blind pipe flanges also allow easy access to the pipe in the event that work must be done inside the line. Slip on Pipe flanges with a hub have published specifications that range from 1/2″ thru 96″. Coastal Flange provides Blind pipe flanges in all material grades, specifications and sizes.

Blind pipe flanges are typically provided with a raised face, flat face, or RTJ facing. When a raised face is necessary for blind pipe flanges, the standard height is 1/16″ for blind pipe flanges under 400#. For blind pipe flanges of 400# and up, the standard blind pipe flange raised face height is 1/4″.

Features of blind flanges:

Some important features of blind flanges are as follows:

  • Blind flanges are sometimes supplied with NPT fittings which allow pressure test connections to be fitted.
  • They are used to blank off the ends of pipe.
  • They are also used to blank off the ends of valves and pressure vessel opening.
  • Considering factors like internal pressure and bolt loading, blind flanges, especially in the larger sizes, are the most highly stressed of all types of flanges.
  • Since the maximum stresses in a blind flange are bending stresses at the center, they can safely be allowed to be higher than in other types of flanges.
  • Blind flanges are made to fit standard pipes in all sizes.

Piping is easier to drill or weld at the construction stage. Once it was in use, drilling or welding will need prolong cleaning especially when the fluid transferred is combustible. For the mean of future extension, either the blind or valve would be used to seal the end.

Instead, one places the blind flange between open flanges creating a block, thereby stopping the flow of a liquid through the pipeline. They typically have holes that are machined to match those of a what might be a connecting flange or valve that would be in that place.
In many cases, a blind flange is used when repair is needed at a point further up the pipeline. Using a blind flange will allow one to disconnect the flanges further downstream without creating a spill or leak. A blind flange is used commonly when a new valve needs to be installed or to shut down a pipeline that is no longer needed for use.
Advantage of Blind Flanges

  • A much more cost efficient way to seal a pipe when doing repairs
  • Blind flanges are convenient to install
  • They can save a good amount of time and money

Because valves may be located extremely far, even miles from where the work needs to be done, a blind flange allows you to stop the flow of fluid much closer to the job site. Valves are also known to stick and are very expensive to replace depending on the type of valve being used. The less you have to mess with a valve the slimmer the chances you have of breaking it. So where a shutoff valve might be used, the placement of blind flanges may suffice.
Many who construct a pipeline will incorporate a blind flange into the ending length of the pipeline. By doing this, it allows for necessary continuation or expansion of the pipeline.
