What are Ring Joint Gaskets?

Ring Joint Gasket is widely used in oil, petroleum and chemical process fields. Precision machined, metallic sealing rings suitable for high pressure and high temperature applications.
Ring joint gasket is manufactured in accordance with API 6A and ASME B16.20 specifications and come in various profiles.There are four basic profiles: Oval type R, Octagonal type R, RX and BX.

Types of Ring Joint Gaskets

Oval Ring Joint Gasket

  • Ring Joint Gaskets are for oilfield and process industry duties.
  • Oval shape gasket is belong to API 6A R series 
  • These gaskets are used in pressures up to 10,000 PSI.
  • The oval type is the only gasket that will fit a bottom radiused groove.
  • Gaskets and not re-used after torque.

The ring type joint was initially developed for high pressure and temperature applications found in the petroleum industry and is primarily used in the oil field on drilling and completion equipments. However, today this product range can also be found on valves and pipework assemblies, along with some high integrity pressure vessel joints.
Tolerances (Inches)

  • “A” Width of ring: +/-0.008
  • “B” “H” Height of ring: +/-0.020
  • “P” Average pitch diameter of ring: +/-0.007
  • “23o” Angle: +/- 1/2o

Standard
Standard style R ring type joints are manufactured in accordance with both API 6A and ASME B16.20 size and ratings. Available in both oval and octagonal configurations, both types are interchangeable on the modern octagonal type grooved flanges.
As with all metal ring type joints including style R, it is recommended to replace the ring when flange connection is broken.

Octagonal Ring Joint Gasket

  • Ring Joint Gaskets are for oilfield and process industry duties.
  • Octagonal shape gasket is belong to API 6A R series 
  • These gaskets are used in pressures up to 10,000 PSI, more than Oval ring joint.
  • The oval type is the only gasket that will fit a bottom radiused groove.
  • Gaskets and not re-used after torque.  

RX Ring Joint Gasket 

  • Ring Joint Gaskets are for oilfield and process industry duties.
  • RX gaskets are designed for pressures up to 15,000 PSI.
  • RX types of gaskets are more costly then Oval and Octagonal rings.
  • RX type gaskets perform excellent in API 6B flanged.

The style RX is an adaptation of the standard style R which energizes on assembly. The RX is designed to fit the same groove design as a standard style R, making the joints interchangeable.
Consideration should be given to the difference in finished make-up distance.
The modified design uses an energizing on assembly effect with improves the efficiency of the seal.
Tolerances (Inches)

  • “A” Width of ring: +0.008-0.008
  • “H” Height of ring: +0.008-0.000
  • “OD” Outer dimension of ring: +0.020,-0.000
  • “23o” Angle: +/- 1/2o

BX Ring Joint Gasket

  • Although similar in style to the octagonal ring joint
  • BX series can only be used with 6BX flanges
  • BX rings for higher pressure rating starting at 5,000 lbs, and ending with 20,000 lbs.
  • Rings can not be re-used.

The type BX energized ring type joints, manufactured in accordance with API 6A, are designed for use on pressurized systems up to 20,000 psi.
When correctly fitted, the type BX gasket allows virtual face to face contact of the flange faces which means that the gasket in fully trapped on both the inner and outer diameters.
All BX gasket incorporate a pressure balance hole to ensure equalization of pressure which may be trapped in the grooves.

  • “D” Height of ring: +/-0.002
  • “OD” Outer dimension of ring: +0.000,-0.005
  • “23o” Angle: +/- 1/2o

Lens Ring Joint Gasket 
Lens ring joint used in higher pressure then 3,000 lbs.
These gaskets had been used on pipe flanges in synthesizing line.
Lens ring joint gasket manufactured in accordance with DIN 2696, provide the engineer with a high integrity, high pressure and temperature seal for special applications.
Lens rings have a spherical surface and are suitable for use with conical flange faces. So other styles are available on request.

IX SEAL RING

  • The IX Seal Rings are designed and used where the NORSOK CFC (Compact Flange Connections);
  • The IX Seal Rings made from three different steels;
  • The IX Seal coating with PTFE by different colors.

IX Seal Rings are designed and used where NORSOK CFC (Compact Flange Connections) are in use.

The rings come in three different kinds of steel and are coated with PTFE in varying colors in order to distinguish between them

(Standard identification NORSOK)

The designed or materials shall be selected, so that main sealing ares can not be subject to corrosion.

Typical Seal Ring Materials:

Typical minimum yield stress and ultimate stress of the seal ring material shall at maximum design temperature be 300MPa and 360MPa, respectively, in order to allow for reasonably elastic spring-back.

Lower strength may be used, but is not recommended.

The user is responsible for selecting a seal ring material which is suitable for the service medium and the design temperature conditions.

Seal ring materials are commonly chosen to be compatible with the flange material,

I.e. Duplex seal ring in duplex flange.

How IX Ring Seal Works

IX Seal Ring axial forces are exerted on the taper of the metal seal ring and translated into a radial sealing force. Furthermore with increased pre-load, the bevel is closed and face to face contact is achieved at the outer wedge while most of the bolt pre-load is transferred as compressive forces between the flange faces at the heel.

There are two independent seals. The first seal is created by application of seal seating stress at the flange heel. The flange also remains in contact along it`s outer circumference at the flange faces for all allowable load levels. The main seal is the IX Seal Ring. The seal ring force is provided by the elastic stored energy in the stressed seal ring. Any hell leakage will give intemal pressure acting on the seal ring inside intensifying the sealing action.

The design aims at preventing exposure to oxygen and other corrosive agents. Thus, this prevents corrosion of the flange faces, the stressed length of the bolts and the seal ring.

Features:

The higher the pressure the more attractive the Yaang design becomes as internal pressure intensifies the sealing action;

IX seal ring can be at high temperatures. Maximum service temperature being limited by the seal material selected. Materials range from carbon and alloy steel through to inconel, with a range of coating for lubrication;

Cold quench conditions and thermal cycling are the cause of most leakage problems where conventional compressible type joints and seal materials are used. The additional flexibility of the IX Seal Ring ensures a tight seal during thermal transient conditions;

compact and lighter flange designs can usually be achieved by using IX Seal Rings. Fluid seal areas and joint loads are lower when compared with conventional compressible type joints;

The all IX Seal Ring is elastic in design and on dismantling reverts to its original form ready for re-use. All seals of a given size are interchangeable without any pre-fitting.

HX Seal Rings

  • HX Seal Rings Elastic seal, 
  • It’s energized by the deformation of the seal falnages towards the seal centre line.
  • This deformation is govened by the groove and seal geometries.
  • The HX Seal Ring will be pressure energized when subjected to pressure either from the inside or the outside.

The HX Seal works equally well both directions and is therfore the best choice when also large external pressures can occur (Recommended for subsea use).

A robust seal used in the most demanding applications.

No practical limit for pressure that can be taken.
