What is Monel 502?

Monel 502 (also known as UNS N05502) is a nickel copper alloy, which is part of monel series superalloys. Monel 502 is usually present in the form of sheet, strips, rods, bars and wires, which improves machinability due to its high sulfur content. In addition, the superalloy has excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. These properties make it very suitable for difficult marine and chemical environments. It is also resistant to sulfuric acid and performs well at sub zero temperatures.

Superalloys have the ability to work at extremely high temperatures and severe mechanical stresses. They also have good creep resistance and oxidation resistance. They can form different shapes. They are treated by solution hardening, work hardening and precipitation hardening to improve their strength. There are three types of superalloys, namely cobalt base alloy, nickel base alloy and iron base alloy.

The machinability of Monel 502

This alloy is similar to Monel K500, but with improved machinability. It machines much the same as the austenitic (300 Series) stainless steels.

Forming of Monel 502

  • The alloy has good ductility and is readily formed by conventional methods.

Welding of Monel 502

  • Weldability is good by conventional means.

Hot working of Monel 502

  • Hot work temperature range is 2100 F to 1600 F. Do not allow the product to slow cool in air, rather it should be cooled from 1450 F (or higher) by quenching.

Cold working of Monel 502

  • The alloy has good ductility and may be cold worked by conventional means.

Aging of Monel 502

  •  Aging is done at 1100 F to 1125 F for 16 hours, followed by slow furnace cooling at a rate of 25 F per hour to 900 F. Cooling rate from 900 F is not critical.

Annealing of Monel 502

  • Annealing is done at 1900 F and water quench.

Heat Treatment of Monel 502

  • This alloy responds to a precipitation hardening heat treatment and to annealing.
